Job Description Umeå university is seeking outstanding candidates for 1-3 post doc positions and 1-2 PhD student positions at the Department of Computing Science. The Grid computing research at the department is currently focusing on the design and analysis of methods, algorithms and software for service-oriented infrastructure for Grid resource brokering, Grid accounting, Grid-wide fairshare scheduling, multi-level job management systems, workflow management, and Grid portals, and an extension towards resource virtualization techniques is planned. Topics like Grid architecture design, service-oriented application development, and Grid standardization awareness are central to all these projects. Software is contributed to NorduGrid/ARC and the Globus Toolkit, the latter as a member of the Globus Academic Affiliate Program. The group is also an associated member of the CoreGRID Network of Excellence, member of the NESSI workgroup on service-oriented infrastructure, and funding of an additional EU project is under negotiation.

The research is performed in close collaboration with the High Performance Computing Center North (HPC2N). HPC2N is a member center of the Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (SNIC), providing competence and computing resources, including grid resources. HPC2N actively takes part in Swegrid, NDGF, NorduGrid and EGEE.

The current positions are aimed to strengthen and broaden our current research, and includes collaboration with our international academic and industrial partners. The positions will be partly funded by the Swedish Research Council (VR) and the EU. Specific details about the positions follows below.

Post doctoral researchers in Grid computing
(1-3 positions)

The positions are aimed for post doctoral research jointly with researchers in our group and with our collaboration partners. The position includes either a competitive salary for one year with possible renewal up to three years or a competitive tax-free stipend for one year with possible renewal up to two years.

Successful candidates should have earned a PhD in computer science or some other field relevant for the position. (PhD students soon to complete their theses may also be considered.) In addition to excellent academic track record, the positions require documented experience of software development, and experience from development of service-oriented architectures (SOA) is a merit. Good communication skills in written and spoken English is also required.

PhD students in Grid computing
(1-2 positions)
Dnr: 313-3771-07

The positions are aimed for PhD studies and research jointly with researchers in our group and with our collaboration partners, leading to a PhD exam. The positions include a competitive salary for a period of up to four years research time, provided that expected study and research results are achieved. The positions may also include part-time work (20%) as teaching assistant. If so, the total time for the position is extended accordingly (up to maximum five years).

Successful candidates should have earned a MSc or similar in computer science or some other field relevant for the position. (MSc students soon to complete their theses may also be considered.) In addition to excellent study results, solid programming skills are required. Good communication skills in written and spoken English is also required.
